After much research and deliberation,
It looks like we will not be able to be tax exempt or any other kind of non-profit or not-for-profit. Originally, I had hoped more people would come on board to help us promote diversity and inclusion on a broader scale in each person’s individual community, but… no such luck. So, since it is just Dovid and I and we have enough on our plate just getting by month to month and on top of that getting ready for our departure spring 2016, we will have to put the idea of a charity organization on the back burner. (Insert big sad face here)
Too many requirements
In order to be tax exempt (which is federal only and NOT state I found out), we have to have a board of directors and already be doing community actions of some kind. I would like to do some community things but I don’t have the energy to look for people to do all that now and find folk to keep it going while we sail.
Patreon & GoFundMe instead
We would still like to give you guys a MUCH better quality experience as you follow along. Plus, we want to upgrade our safety equipment.
With that in mind, we have a Patreon profile to raise funds to make better videos via monthly pledges from patrons. We started a GoFundMe campaign to get a liferaft (or a dinghy equipped to be a liferaft) before we cross the bar this June.
Maybe a Kickstarter?
We are more of a book/documentary deal which is what kickstarter and indiegogo were made for.
We could still file a business name and use that to keep track of our expenses and not have to worry about taxes since 100% of any income we make will be used for the trip and there will still technically be no profit.
We’ll see if that is something we need to do by law or not (THANK YOU LegalShield for affordable legal advice for less than $20/mo instead of $200/hr!). I’ll keep you posted as we find out more.
I definitely appreciate all of you who are following along with us as we prepare for this amazing journey!
As always, thanks for reading!
