I’ve decided to start doing posts about the difficult journey I have been on to create passive income so that I will still have money coming in while sailing around the world with The Emuna Endeavor. I’ll be calling it: Starting from Zero – Searching for Ways to Create Passive Income Without Upfront Money. Chapter One? What I Tried and Failed.
What have I tried so far?
— Network Marketing —
I have attempted multiple times over the years to participate in network marketing but I do not have the discipline or the interest to do the up front face-to-face client work necessary for that to have consistent returns that lead to passive income in the long run. I know quite a few people who have had immense success in network marketing, but I am just not cut out for it apparently.
— Print on Demand —
In 2011-2012 I was a nearly full time artist. I was a member of two different artists’ collectives and had my work showing in galleries and other venues all over the downtown Phoenix, AZ arts district. Selling original art was not panning out for me and plus it was not an ongoing source of passive income. Someone suggested CafePress so I created a profile to have my art printed on a multitude of different items. I have yet to make ANY money from this profile.
I also tried DeviantArt, Society6, ImageKind and others. Most of these have commission of about 10% per item purchased. I have made a few dollars from Society6 but that’s about it. I attribute this lack of activity to my not promoting my sites nearly as diligently as I should have.
— Google AdSense —
In 2014 I decided to monetize my blogs and YouTube channels with Google Adsense. I switched ALL my blogging to Blogger since WordPress did not allow use of Google AdSense and this lovely little website does not get enough traffic to qualify to get a share of ad revenue.
AdSense seemed to be working at first with the one blog making $20-$30 per month and I was excited to expand it to my other blogs and to my YouTube channels. Then in late 2014 (early 2015?) Google disabled the account. All I got was a no-reply form email with a link to dispute it. So of course I clicked the link so I could get my little income stream back!
The link led to a questionnaire form that asked all these complicated programming questions about what kind of code I was using. UM… I was just using a free template on Blogger and typing my posts into the box and hitting “Publish” so I had NO IDEA why I was being blocked or how to fix it. The only reply I got to my appeal was that I still was not able to use Google AdSense on ANY of my linked accounts. Not even the one that I have had for nearly a decade!
The experience was made extra frustrating because there is no way to interact with an actual human being. I just got the no-reply form emails and no real answers to my questions and definitely not a resolution that was satisfactory for me. Needless to say I have stopped using Blogger for my blogs and now use WordPress exclusively. Hopefully this site will get the traffic needed to qualify for ad revenue. Wish us luck!
— Crowdfunding —
Technically most crowdfunding is not an ongoing source of income, but it is relatively passive. The issue I have with fundraising is the feeling that I am begging and also being spammy to my friends and family to try to get things done. I have tried GoFundMe and Indiegogo with very little success. I have yet to fully fund a campaign. I have two campaigns live right now that I am hoping will break that streak. This chapter is still being written.
(I have an ongoing campaign on GoFundMe https://www.gofundme.com/ee-safetyequip and on Indiegogo a current campaign ending June 30 https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sailing-for-peace-an-ongoing-worldwide-project/x/13692488)
- There is a new thing that I found called “Patreon” that let’s people make monthly pledges to a cause or artist. So far that is not doing that great either. For us it is a catch 22 because people who don’t look professional don’t get many funders but we have the profile SO WE CAN GET THE THINGS TO LOOK MORE PROFESSIONAL. We’ll see how this one pans out in the long run I guess.
I saw a link in a Facebook ad for a “free” book about marketing. I paid the shipping and handling and got the book and the premise requires setting up a landing site with godaddy or whomever ($30-$100 per year) but it seems to be a model more suited for people that are offering a service more than for people selling a specific product.
Today I have checked out a few YouTube videos about passive income and most seem to require seed money that I don’t have. When I say “Starting at Zero” I really mean ZERO dollars. I did see a link to an article by someone that was recommended in the video of someone who I trust him to not be shady… so… I’ll read that and see what if anything I can put into practice. Stay tuned!
Thanks for reading!
I decided instead of adding ANOTHER category to THIS blog, I would do a whole NEW blog JUST for this one year journey to find out how I can garner some (mostly) passive income SOMEHOW. Enter the “Starting from Zero” blog! Check it out! ^_^
