In my internet search for news where tolerance is the theme, I found this article from December 2014 about Christmas in the UAE. As an American Christian, I know that the extremists would have us believe that all Christians in the Middle East are persecuted and driven underground and that Islam as a whole has a hatred for Christianity which of course any observant person would know is not the case.
I was glad to find this article about the long history of tolerance that the governments of the United Arab Emarites have had with other religions. It is interesting to see that in regions with no indigenous Christian communities that there is an openness to people expressing the celebrations of their minority religions (the focus of the article was on Christianity but it did mention that other religions are expressed as well).
Things like this are part of what I hope to find when I finally get to that part of the world. There is an idea that is spread that as Americans we will find no welcome in the Middle East. There is the presentation of the perception that all countries in the region are against the Christianity and Judaism. I am hoping to find people from those areas to connect with prior to our leaving so that we will have a real idea of the areas that Americans are taught to fear.
If you are form these areas or still live there I would love to hear your thoughts. If you know anyone from those areas or that still lives there, please tell them about this post because I would love to hear from them and their thoughts on this.
Thanks so much for reading!
