Have I mentioned recently that before now that I have never sailed in my life? Dovid has a friend in the mooring basin that says he will teach me for free. We haven’t coordinated that yet, but hopefully while we have the nice summer weather we can get on that. Plus I need to get certified so that I can go out on the open sea.
Hopefully the bigger boat will be a forgiving ship to learn on. Dov says if it gets really bad when we are underway, we can always just close the door and hang on and she’ll get us through. Wind blows like this, move sails to fill like wings, boat moves. Tacking is just diagonal use of the wind to get where we want to go – no biggie as long as I duck under the boom as it swings sides. I mustn’t stand for that part! Too much air spills over, not enough and the sails are baggy. Adjust to proper airfoil shape and poof – sailing. It’s just physics, I’m a nerd, so hopefully it will be intuitive – we’ll see.
We have a full keel so we are steady in the water, a thick fiberglass hull – and the things we need to finish it out and set her up electronically are all available here not too expensively. And we can decorate the heck out of the boat!
I’m really looking forward to getting out on the water as soon as I can! Plus I plan on seeing about getting into the crewman program at the community college so I can learn about boat repair and hopefully celestial navigation (just in case the gear malfunctions for some reason).
Such a HUGE adventure!
Thank you for reading this and we look forward to hearing from you!
